June, 2016 | Coconut Oil is My New Favorite Product!
I heard all about the new coconut oil craze, and I just HAD to try it. There are limitless uses for it, but using it to replace shaving cream is the one that caught my interest the most.
I purchased Organic Virgin Coconut Oil from Thrive Market and I'm never going back. It is the best product I have ever used for shaving; no razor bumps, no irritation, and the softest, smoothest skin ever! Keep reading to check out my play-by-play on how to get the softest, most touchable legs on the planet.

I ordered Nutiva's Organic Virgin Coconut Oil from Thrive Market's website and it was very reasonably priced for the 15oz. jar. Luckily, coconut oil does not have to be refrigerated, so when the weather was stifling, the product was still okay, just in liquid form.
Coconut oil can be in two different forms: liquid or solid. It has a melting point of 76 degrees Fahrenheit, so if you leave it out on a hot day, it will be completely liquid. Luckily, it is much easier to shave with it in liquid form as opposed to solid form. I had the unfortunate luck to receive it in solid form, so I needed to melt it a little before using it. |
The products that I used from beginning to end, except for moisturizing lotion (which I decided to use afterward):
Before you think about starting to shave, make sure you exfoliate first! This is a very important step to get a close shave. Exfoliating ensures that you remove any dead skin allowing softer legs. Another very important step is to use warm water, NOT hot; using warm water opens your pores, which will give you an even closer shave. And we're ready to go! |
Now you're ready to shave! One very crucial tip is to not shave over the same area multiple times. This will cause irritation and razor bumps, which definitely do not create soft, smooth legs. After you're finished shaving, make sure you rinse with COOL water to close your pores back up. Closing your pores ensures the regrowing hair is not poking out of them causing the dreaded stubble as soon as your freshly-shaved legs hit cold air. |
That is my hairy leg. Isn't it beautiful?
After you exfoliate using warm water, the next thing you want to do is pat your legs dry; do NOT rub them dry. This pulls and tugs on the skin creating irritation before you even start shaving. Be as gentle as possible to ensure your legs are well-taken care of. Like I mentioned before, I needed to warm up my coconut oil jar due to it being completely solidified before use. I ran the entire jar under hot water for a few minutes to allow some of the top layer to melt and become liquid (if you don't feel like waiting, coconut oil melts on your skin, so you can scoop it out with a spoon and rub it between your hands and then onto your legs). |
After shaving, you can either air dry your legs (if you have the time), or dry them with a clean towel or fresh paper towels. Remember, your pores were open, so you don't want to use a dirty towel and risk bacteria getting into them causing irritation.
After drying your luscious legs, you're ready to go! Shaving with coconut oil is already very moisturizing and smoothing, but if you have the desire (who wouldn't), feel free to slather on some lotion or body butter. I used Moisture Recovery Lotion from Walgreens that is fragrance-free to avoid irritation on my sensitive skin. If you have a moisturizer or body butter you prefer, use that! Your legs will thank you, as well as whoever gets to touch them. -D |
